Is Your ID Real?

Is Your ID Real?

by Sadie Harris

Paragraphs

Maine has offered REAL IDs since 2019. To obtain a REAL ID, you must provide three items to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). First, you need to provide something that establishes your identity and citizenship. It must include your date of birth.  If you aren’t a citizen, then you must show some other lawful status in the U.S.  You will also need to provide any marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders if your name on your license differs from the name on your birth certificate. Second, you must provide your Social Security Number, or evidence of SSN ineligibility.

And third, you need two documents that prove your physical residence in the State of Maine. This can be a utility bill, paystub, or mortgage statement, for example.

Those who currently have a valid license or ID are not required to renew it prior to its expiration date, unless they choose to switch to a Real ID. When your valid license expires, you have the option of getting a Real ID credential or opting out. Those who opt out will be issued a non-REAL ID license.
