Pursuant to the Immigration and Naturalization Act, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is charged with preventing unauthorized entry into the US. Border Patrol agents are allowed to stop and conduct warrantless searches of vessels, trains, aircrafts, or other vehicles anywhere within “a reasonable distance from” the national border. This distance has been defined as 100 air miles from any external boundary of the United States, including coastal boundaries. As a result of this rule, the entire state of Maine falls within the 100-mile boundary.
