About Maine's Food Supplement Program (formerly Food Stamps)
News Flash! August 9, 2012 – Did you get a letter from DHHS in July telling you that you have been overpaid Food Supplement benefits? DHHS overpaid many people by over-counting the“Utility Allowance” deduction. This was not your fault; it was “agency error.” You do not have to do anything in response to this notice.
September 27, 2012 update - The federal government has determined that you will not have repay these overpayments. However, Maine DHHS has appealed their decision to charge the state for this money. Stay tuned. Read more here.

Here is some information about the Food Supplement Program in Maine. Find out how to qualify and how much help you can get.
- Try our Maine Food Supplement Program Estimators. This easy-to-use tool helps you to figure out whether you are eligible and for how much.
- To apply online, go to My Maine Connection. This is recommended. Find your local office here. More information from DHHS here (including link to the "Maine Food Supplement Program Certification Manual," which the DHHS workers use to determine eligibility and grant amounts).

- For information about what you are allowed to buy with your EBT card, go to the USDA website.
- Go to the Maine Equal Justice Project website to read The Food Stamp Program: An Overview. This will answer many questions you may have about how to qualify for a food supplement. How much property can you own? Who has to follow work rules? Who must be included as part of the benefit household?
